When I first saw this couple, they were on the corner next to the grocery store. She was sitting in the wheelchair and he was holding a cardboard sign indicating that they needed money for food and a room. As you can see, the woman isn’t handicapped at all. They are heading to the train station a mile away to probably head back to SLC where they will use the money they had collected from generous Utahns to most likely buy drugs/beer. I’m not going to tell you to stop giving these type of people money. What I would encourage you to do, which would help them more, is help them stop believing that this is the only way for them to live their lives. Talk to them. Listen to their stories. Show empathy. Slow down and listen. Let them talk so they can hear themselves tell their stories and realize the truth - they don’t need to be on the streets begging for money. Justin identified one that abled-bodied people wouldn’t have noticed at all.
